Plants need soil to grow! Or do they?
Today we discussed this statement, "Plants need soil to grow!" Our learners said whether they agree or disagree with this.
Blaze: Soil makes the plants grow.
Caspian: I disagree because drift wood plants and cacti don’t need soil to grow.
Edward: I disagree because upside down plants
Theo: I agree that plants need soil to grow because there are nutrients in the soil.
Lily Ji: If it isn’t in the soil, it won’t grow.
Eva: I agree because it helps the plants to grow fast and the plants need room for the roots to sprout.
Kate: Plants need soil to grow. I agree because it helps the plants because it has lots of nutrients. You also need sun.
Dylan: I disagree because cactus can grow in sand. So some plants need sand instead.
Reuben: I agree- you need soil for the roots.
Georgina: Plants need soil to grow because it is good for them.
Molly: I agree because they need space for the roots and roots and they also need sun and rain. How else would they grow.
We have put some information together for students to research:

Transition
Every Friday, Year 3 students work with the Year 4 and 5 students to get to know their new space, friends and teachers.
Today we did a thinking activity called the BAR key. BAR makes things BIGGER, ADDS something and REPLACES something. We brainstormed lots of ideas and came up with some new inventions. Our students are very good at thinking outside of the box.
On the left is Lachlan's design. He was able to make a new invention from a skateboard.
Students from Autahi came into Tautoru today for our transition time. They did some writing based on the story, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear."

Mystery Skype with Bailey Road School in Auckland
Some people from Tautoru have been doing some Mystery skype on Monday. We'll tell you all about it!
Isn't it exciting!
How to play Mystery Skype:
First, you have to say to a person that you want to know what your email is, and say that you want to do Mystery Skype.
Mystery Skype is when you skype someone or some people and guess where they live.
You take one question at a time, and ask some proper questions (not silly ones.)
Here are some suggestions:
Are you in New Zealand?
Are you in the South Island?
Do you live in a big city?
And lots more…
The school that we skyped was Bailey Road School in Auckland.
Skype with Chrissy
Today we skyped Chrissy and Nyuala. We were all very excited to see them and had loads of questions to ask.
