Down the Back of the Chair

We were inspired to write "Down The Back of The Chair" poems after looking at the Mahutonga Blog. They did such a great job and we thought that we could do the same.

We read the story by Margaret Mahey story, then we wrote our own poems and recorded them on Seesaw. Here are some of them...

This is the shared poem that we wrote together:

A fox, some blocks and polka dots
A plane, a train an airport lane
A mat, a bat and hairy cat
Down the back of the chair

A chair, a bear, pink underwear
A king, a ring, a chicken wing
A queen, a bean, a magazine
Down the back of the chair

A can, a man, a chinese fan
A dog, a log and a spotty frog
A cat, a mat, a stinky rat
Down the back of the chair

An orange peel, an electric eel
Some diamond rings, emerald things
A kung fu Kangaroo,
A sparkly old high heel shoe
Down the back of the chair

Glurp, the purple alien

We are learning to read aloud with fluency and expression. Today we read Glurp, the purple alien. Here we are reading the poem...

glurp-the-purple-alien
I’m Glurp, the purple alien.
I come from outer space.
I have a purple body.
I have a purple face.
I use my purple tentacles
to dine on purple food.
The treats I find the tastiest
are purely purple-hued.
I’ll eat a purple burger.
I’ll slurp a purple shake.
I’ll feast on purple pickles and
partake of purple cake.
I’ll nosh on purple noodles.
I’ll feast on purple fries.
I’ll munch on purple macaroons
and purple pizza pies.
I haven’t seen your planet,
but, if I ever do,
you’d better not wear purple.
I might just dine on you.

Music: Shared Writing

We are listening to music...
We have been learning about sound as part of our Inquiry... Today we listened to a range of different types of music.

This is a piece of shared writing by Nic's literacy group:

Music

Music reminds me of
Shooting stars in the night sky
A golden violin on a summer’s night
The moon singing in the dark sky
The funky DJ mixing disco sounds
A 90’s movie with a car chase

Music reminds me of
A giant tornado speeding through town
People running along like a herd of elephants
A volcano erupting with hot lava
Owls hooting through the night
The opening of a Brazilian carnival
Cannon bolts falling to the ground

Music makes me feel
Surprised like bangs of fireworks
Bright like Christmas lights
Excited like a university graduate
Strong like a super hero flying
Sad like a lost battle
Sleepy like I have walked for a thousand days.

Music is spectacular!

The Kite

As part of our reading this week, we read this poem:

The Kite
by Harry Behn

How bright on the blue
Is a kite when it's new!

With a dive and a dip
It snaps its tail
Then soars like a ship
With only a sail

As over tides
Of wind it rides,

Climbs to the crest
Of a gust and pulls,
Then seems to rest
As wind falls.

When string goes slack
You wind it back

And run until
A new breeze blows
And its wings fill
And up it goes!

How bright on the blue
Is a kite when it's new!

But a raggeder thing
You never will see
When it flaps on a string
In the top of a tree.

Here are some of us reading the poem:

Remember Poems

Artwork by Matilda
We wrote poems based on this poem...

Summer by Marci Ridlon

Have you ever smelled summer?
Sure you have.
Remember that time
when you were tired of running
or doing nothing much
and you were hot
and you flopped right down on the ground?
Remember how the warm sun smelled and the
grass?
That was summer.

Remember that time
when you were trying to climb
higher in the tree
and you didn’t know how
and your foot was hurting in the fork
but you were holding tight to the branch?
Remember how the bark smelled then
- all dusty dry, but nice?
That was summer.

Remember that time
when the storm blew up quick
and you stood under a ledge
and watched the rain till it stopped
and when it stopped
you walked out again to the sidewalk?
Remember how the pavement smelled
- all steamy warm and wet?
That was summer.

If you try very hard
can you remember that time
when you played outside all day
and you came home for dinner
and had to take a bath right away,
right away?

It took you a long time to pull
your shirt over your head.
Do you remember smelling the sunshine?
That was summer.
