Positive Emotions

Tuesday mornings are our Positive Education mornings in Tautoru. Over the last two weeks we have been exploring emotions.

We all experience a range of different emotions at different times. Did you know that you can feel all sorts of emotions during a day?! Your emotions are what make you, YOU!

During our Pos. Ed mornings we have been mixing colours and thinking about how they make us feel.

We have also been showing different emotions on our faces and drawing self portraits.

We know that we can't feel happy all the time and that's ok. But the more we experience positive emotions and build on them, the more perspective, perseverance and creativity we have for our learning throughout the day.

If you are interested in finding out more about building positive emotions, check out this blog post by Georgiana Cameron here.

Cross Country

What a fantastic morning for the annual Worser Bay Cross Country. Not only was the sun shining but all of the students participated with zest, positivity, and perseverance.

We would like to thank the students that ran alongside our runners and everyone that supported us  along the course. It was also great to see so many students give the cross country a go and using a growth mindset when facing a challenge.

I Am Powerful

How can I be a powerful learner? What could that look like?

This term we are practising being powerful and what that might look like when we are at school.

We know that being powerful means:
  • I can think about overcoming challenges
  • I am excited about new learning and I challenge myself
  • I understand that not knowing is good
  • I take action
  • I keep trying and don’t give up
  • I can make decisions about my environment
We have started to think about what we do that makes us powerful already, and how we can keep learning how to develop other behaviours that make us powerful.
Here are some examples of our ideas so far:

Perspective and New Ideas

We have been learning a bit more about the character strength of Perspective. We can describe it as:
- looking at things in different ways.
- finding different ways to solve a problem.
- making a different choice.

We read the book "The Most Magnificent Thing" and discovered how the main character's perspective changed, and how she used the help of a friend to get a new perspective. Now we know that we can ask other people for their perspective too!

Some of us used perspective by coming up with different ideas when using a set number of sticks and found different ways to arrange them.

Some of us thought about a problem and our buddies had to think of different ways to solve the problem.

Perspective links to how we are thinking of different ways to solve maths problems during Number Talks

After swimming, the year 3's and year 4's are getting together and sharing their writing. We are using buddy feedback to give us a new perspective on our writing.

Perspective is very useful in lots of different ways!

Perseverance & the Power of Positive Langauge!

Over the last two weeks we have been exploring the character strength of Perseverance. Many of us knew that perseverance was all about effort and working at something until we succeed.

What we didn't realise was that the langauge we use (to ourselves and sometimes others) can either help us to persevere and experience success or hold us back!

We started our session off by completing a pretty difficult challenge. While we were working on the challenge Susie recorded the things we said. When time was up we had a look at the board.....we were a little shocked at the things we said to ourselves.

After we had a little time to reflect on this we all came up with some positive and helpful phrases or words we could say to ourselves or others when we are finding something challenging.

Our challenge this week has been to remember the power of positive language and use our helpful phrases, when we need to use our strength of perseverance throughout our learning in Tautoru.
