Kite making

In preparation for our kite flying celebration for Matariki we have been making kites in class. We have attempted a hexagonal box kite and also a kite based on traditional Maori designs. See you on Friday!

The Kite

As part of our reading this week, we read this poem:

The Kite

How bright on the blue

Is a kite when it's new!

With a dive and a dip

It snaps its tail

Then soars like a ship

With only a sail

As over tides

Of wind it rides,

Climbs to the crest

Of a gust and pulls,

Then seems to rest

As wind falls.

When string goes slack

You wind it back

And run until

A new breeze blows

And its wings fill

And up it goes!

How bright on the blue

Is a kite when it's new!

But a raggeder thing

You never will see

When it flaps on a string

In the top of a tree.

Matariki Invitation cards

We made some beautiful Matariki cards for our celebration on Friday...we hope that you can join us!

                   
 

The kite making begins...

Today we started to make some big kites that we will fly on the beach on Friday for Matariki.

Nau mai Haere mai ki te Whakanui o Matariki:  Welcome to our Matariki celebration

Day: Rāmere

Date: 17th Pipiri

and time:  9:30am-11:00am

Haere mai rere te manu aute ki ahau: Come and fly a kite with me

Ka waiho tatou i te tātahi:  We will be at the beach

If you are able to spend some time with us that would be great otherwise we will share some things with you when we get home. We can share some food together; please bring something to share.

Plastic Free Peninsula Logo Design

Today we started to design a logo for the Plastic Free Peninsula project. We needed to keep our drawings simple and without any colour. 

Matariki Stars

Today we made some stars for Matariki. We had to follow instructions about folding and glueing.

Have a look at them on the windows.

Tomorrow we are going to try to write instructions to explain how we made them.

Te Kawa and Oliver from Sustainable Coastlines came into school today to talk about coastlines and waterways. They explained how we can keep the waterways clean. They also said why we shouldn't cut trees and why we should plant new trees.
