Tane and The Baskets of Knowledge

We have been reading the story of "Tane and the Baskets of Knowledge".

Tane got attacked by all sorts of insects, reptiles and man eating birds on his way to the heavens to get the baskets of knowledge. We have been talking about how sometimes our learning is tricky and how we have to be brave and persevere, like Tane did, so that we can reach our goal.

Growth Mindset

Today we were given some challenges to try something new, using a tennis ball. We had to use our Growth Mindset, because although some of the activities were easy, some we couldn't do....YET!!!
But we kept trying!!!

Buddy reading

Today we showed kindness, curiosity and team work when we were buddy reading in Autahi.

Dragon Music and Dance

Dragon music and dance.
Today we used the character strength of "Creativity" to make up a tune with instruments,
using a Dragon score.
Then we walked around the school sharing our Chinese New Year dragon dance.

Tautoru Tadpoles

We have been so lucky to have some teeny tiny visitors in Tautoru since school started! Thanks to Solly and his mum, we have had three tadpoles to watch over.

Last week after one had turned into a frog, Solly thought it would be a good idea to release it back into a pond before it grew too big.

There are two tadpoles left and they are growing bigger everyday. All of us in Tautoru have been observing them closely to see how they change as the days go by.

This week Eloi (a very keen observer) drew the life cycle of a frog and wrote a great piece of writing about what he has noticed happening to the tadpoles.

Where's Wally? No, Where's FROGGY?

Since the beginning of the term, Tautoru is super lucky to have some "friends" to join us.  Thanks to Solly and his family for sharing them with Tautoru!

We are all very excited to have these little friends, tadpoles.

Here is a photo of one that turned into a frog!

Wait. WHERE IS THE FROG??

Here it is if you didn't see it in the first picture!

We will have more updates on our little friends from some writing!

Goal Setting

We are preparing for goal setting meetings. We need to make sure that our goals are SMART goals.

Watch this clip that explains what SMART goals are:

These are some of our first ideas about power.

He waka eke noa

This week we have all been learning about the importance of the waka. We watched a video that showed us how each person in a waka is part of a team and responsible for making their waka travel fast through the water.

Tautoru is our waka. It is the place where we come together to discover, learn and achieve great things. We all need to work together for our waka to succeed.

We have each decorated our own waka paddle. On our paddle we have written something we can do to help Tautoru succeed.

Next week we will put our waka together. Make sure you pop by and have a look at our collaborative project. We can't wait to see how it will turn out.

Powhiri practice

In preparation for our powhiri next Friday we invited Autahi to practice a number of songs for the day.

We look forward to seeing lots of whanau next Friday, lets hope the weather is kind.

It has been great spending time with the students in Autahi and getting to know them.

Family Picnic

The family picnic was lots of fun. It was great to play some games, old and new! It was great to see so many children, teachers and parents joining in.
Chinese New Year Dragon.
We have been learning about Chinese New Year. We watched a video about the dragon. Have a look here: Chinese New Year Dragon
We are now creating our own dragon to display in the classroom. It is going to take some perseverance, because it is a big job!

A sea of hands.

We have been creating a sea of hands for our class waka to sit in.

I can ....

Scott's base group visited Autahi this week and shared our thoughts about what we are confident doing.

Some children worked on art, others on music, and lots of students started to build structures.

We are going to keep building on our strengths but also begin to identify what we can't do yet!

新年快樂 Happy New Year!

This week we are learning and celebrating Chinese New Year! It is the year of Rooster.

We watched this video on Tuesday about WHY people celebrate this special event.

We will also learn a song called Gong Xi Gong Xi.
The title of this song, 恭喜恭喜(Gōng xǐ gōng xǐ) means "Congratulations, Congratulations". But in the song it has the meaning "Good wishes to you for a happy and prosperous New Year".

There are some events in the weekend in Wellington City such as fireworks and special art/music performances.
Check out this link to find out more!

We wish you a very happy 'rooster' year!

Here is something extra if you want to find out more about Chinese Zodiac:
Wanwan is a dragon, what are you?

Team building

We are learning how to work in a group. We decided that we need to discuss, listen, share, compromise, reach an agreement and include others who are on their own. We had fun building all sorts of things in Autahi.

Inside playtime

Today was so wet that we had to play inside at lunch time. We played with the blocks, lego, dress ups, drew pictures, read books and made up games of our own. The teachers were impressed and relieved at the way we cleaned up afterwards!

The World is My Audience #5 TWIMA5: What are you cooking?

The Global Cookbook!  #twima5 has been published!

The idea was... "what did you and your students cook up in the classroom last year?  The project is a global cookbook.  Let the world know what you are cooked up in the classroom."

You can read the book on itunes:
