Pikelets

Today Danny's Literacy groups made pikelets. We are learning about explanation writing and we ate pikelets and thought about what they taste like and their texture. Then we did this shared writing to try and explain what a pikelet is:

Pikelets

Do you like pancakes? Well if you do then you are going to like pikelets as well.
A pikelet is a bit like a pancake. The are soft and a bit squishy. They have milk, flour, an egg and sugar in them. While they are cooking in the frying pan you get a delicious buttery smell. When they are cooked you can put butter and jam on them. The butter melts into the pikelet and they almost dissolve in your mouth as you are eating them.
Pikelets! If you haven't tried them, you should!

Hokey Pokey

Last week we made some Hokey Pokey. We put in 5 tablespoons of sugar, 2 tablespoons of golden syrup. Then we brought it to the boil and boiled it for 2 minutes. We added 2 teaspoons of baking soda. The mixture changed colour and bubbled and frothed up. We left it for 2 hours to harden. It was yummy, crunchy and had a rough texture.

Fizz Inflators

We had great fun on Thursday blowing up balloons using vinegar and baking soda.  The acid vinegar reacts with the alkaline baking soda to produce carbon dioxide bubbles.  Because gases require a lot more space than liquid so the carbon dioxide fills the bottle then moves into the balloon and inflates it.  You might like to try this at home and see how varying the amounts of baking soda and vinegar affects the amount the balloons inflate (a word of warning - we had a couple explode!)
