Tautoru wrote postcards to Bukit Timah Primary school for Nicola to take with her to Singapore. We bought a Kete and decorated it with feathers to transport them. Nicola will explain to the children what a Kete is when she gives it to the them. Take a look at our photos to see how beautiful they are! Have a great time Nic!

Connections with Asia
A Note from Nicola...
In August, I will be travelling to Singapore with 11 other educators across New Zealand. I have been connecting with teachers from Bukit Timah Primary School and our students have been starting to learn about Singapore. This week in Tautoru, we have started to write letters to the school and I will bring these over as part of a gift.
By the time our youngest students are in the workplace, the number of middle class in Asia will have increased to over 3 billion… 60% of the world’s middle class will be in Asia by 2030. Three of the four top economies in the world will be in Asia… 1 - China, 2 – USA, 3 – India, 4 – Japan.
New Zealand’s economy is increasingly reliant on our export markets in Asia. China is our biggest export market through our Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed in 2008. We also have FTAs with Korea and ASEAN countries with negotiations underway with India.
In New Zealand itself our demographics are changing. In the last 20 years our Asian population has grown from 3% to 12% and predicted to be 21% by 2038.
An audio visual from Asia New Zealand Foundation helps to explain the Asian Century and what it means for our students – Equipping your child to thrive in the Asian Century
To better prepare our children for their future we are currently exploring how we can develop students’ knowledge, skill and understanding of Asia and Asian cultures.
Our students have generated some questions for Bukit Timah Primary School:
Do you celebrate Christmas?
What kind of food do you eat?
Do you celebrate Christmas?
What do you celebrate?
Do you get awards for your good behaviour or your learning?
How many classes do you have? How many students do you have in each class?
Where do you learn?
What do you learn?
Do you have a uniform?
What time do you start school?
What time do you end school?
What do you guys do for lunch? Where do you eat your lunch?
How many teachers do you have? Who are your teachers?
What languages do you speak?
Do you have technology? If so, what do you use?
What materials do you use for learning?
Why are some of your building shaped like flowers?
What kind of plants do you have?
What furniture do you have in your class? Do you have desks?
What games do you play?
What do you have in your view?
What type of playground do you have?
How big is your school? How many children are there at your school?
Do you go on field trips?
Do you have menus for lunch?
We have permission from Bukit Timah School to post this clip.

Naughty Animal Writing
This is our helping circle. We read our work to one another to see if we need to make changes. Our buddies can help us. We listen to our buddies so that we can get ideas for writing. We can make changes if we need to and we learn more about language.
We watched a movie about Brian (the sheep) walking in the Marlborough Sounds.
Brian was snatched by a naughty weka, never to be seen again!
This inspired us to write about naughty or funny animals...
Dora
By Clem
One day my cat went under the house. There was a door that led under the house. My cat was scratching. My Parents got some food so Dora would come out of under the house, but it did not work. So we tried meat, but that did not work. My mum had to go under to get her out.
Mini
By Nikora
One day when I went to my friend’s house we played outside. We went inside and right in front of the door was Mini the dog. He jumped up on me and didn’t stop licking me on my face. I wanted Mini to stop but I couldn’t open my mouth.
My Cat
By Finlay
One day my cat had escaped from my house. She ate a dead bird. I was very mad at her because she ate the disgusting dead bird. It wasn’t good at all. Then she ate another one. I was so mad that I nearly exploded.
The Weka
By Angus W
The weka stole my favourite toy motorbike. I had to buy another one. The new toy is even better. It is remote control.

Nic and the awesome sheep called Brian went on a adventure. They saw a naughty, naughty weka and he scuttled over to Brian. Brian wanted to take a photo with Mr Weka. So Brian got ready for his photo. The weka started scuttling over to him...
What really actually happened to Brian?
by Liam
Mum was frantically opening the draws. I could see mum reaching for the peanut butter jar. She went off to wash her hands. I walked forwards, just then two sneaky eyes approached. Then it scuttled forward. It had four legs, a pointy nose and long teeth. It was a mouse! It ate all of the peanut butter. ‘’MUM!’’ I screamed.
The Duck
By Cooper
The duck stole my train. I loved it. The duck lived very far.
Naughty Worms
By Leola
The Weka
By Olivia
The weka stole my bag. I got it back. Then I got the weka some food from home. He ate the whole packet.

Naughty Worms

Mum was planting broccoli in the garden on a sunny calm day. “Mum, what are you doing?” I screamed from the bathroom.
“I’m planting!!!!” Mum responded.
A few days later…”Aaaaaaaaaaaaarghhh.” Mum shouted.
Then I came… “what’s wrong?” I asked.
“These worms are munching in our broccoli.”Then I came… “what’s wrong?” I asked.

We are involved in a project called, "If you learned here". Our next task is to make a short movie to describe our day at school. http://ifyoulearnedhere.weebly.com/blog/theme-2-our-day-at-school
Some of our students have begun to think about what we should include in the movie. Here is one of our trailers...
We have been working together to create these trailers.

If you learned here... Trailer
If You Learned Here is a global collaboration and authoring project for students. This project will engage students in a global dialogue about their learning communities. Each school will generate pages for an eBook that we will write and publish together...
We have been busy completing the tasks for Week 1. We have been making a movie to share with the other schools involved. The movie is not ready yet, but here is a sneak peak... Enjoy our trailer...

Year 3 Technology afternoon
Some students in Year 3 have been logging into their Worser Bay Google Accounts for the first time. Students have taken home our Acceptable Use of Technologies Agreement and have discussed how to be a good digital citizen with their parents or caregivers.
Staying safe online runs through everything that we do when using digital technologies.
Students have been learning how to log into their accounts and to send an email.

ICT Afternoon Group
In the ICT afternoon group, we have been exploring different apps on the iPad. Today we used imovie , imovie trailer and pic collage to display our collaborative group work.
Our disaster posters: As a group, we had to think of a disaster and how we would escape from that place. We had to think about objects that we might need.
This is what we came up with...

Mystery Skype with Whangarei Primary School
Some of us Mystery Skyped a class from Whangarei Primary School . It was fun having to research and find places on a map. We took turns and asked questions to each other to narrow it down until we got the correct school.
