The World is My Audience #5 TWIMA5: What are you cooking?

The Global Cookbook!  #twima5 has been published!

The idea was... "what did you and your students cook up in the classroom last year?  The project is a global cookbook.  Let the world know what you are cooked up in the classroom."

You can read the book on itunes:

Hokey Pokey

Today we made Hokey Pokey.

We mixed sugar and golden syrup in a bowl. We wondered what would happen.

Here are some of our predictions:

Nye: Crystals in sugar might get stuck in syrup.
Gina: The sugar will dissolve and maple syrup might get sticky.
Sammy C: Sugar might melt into the syruo then sink.
Blaze: It might change colour
Caleb: It might look like the elephant’s toothpaste.
Eva: It might go gooey.

This is what happened (see what happens when we add baking soda to the mixture):

Elephant Toothpaste

Today we did an experiment called "Elephant Toothpaste". We asked students to do a creative piece of writing. This is what we came up with:

Elephant Toothpaste

It looked like ice cream
It looked like an ice cream maker
It went into swirls
How amazing
Elephant toothpaste
It looked like it had invisible hands
Slowly rose up like bubbles

By  Hadley

Elephant toothpaste
Elephant toothpaste oh my did it erupt?
Elephant toothpaste lots of bubbles rising up.
Elephant toothpaste lots of slime.
Elephant toothpaste it kept going.
By Ruby

Slime Experiment

This is an experiment that I did at home
"Making slime was lots of fun! Lots of good planning, observing and perseverance too. This is my slime - I had to make it carefully because if I didn't it wouldn't work! It was my second try because the first time I rushed and didn't follow the instructions. The second worked much better".

We're loving how our students are so engaged and enthusiastic about our "Kitchen Science" Inquiry.

Meringue recipe

I have been asked by a few children for the recipe we used for our meringues. It was just the recipe from the Edmonds book: 2 egg whites and half a cup of castor sugar. Beat the egg whites (slowly at first apparently) until they are stiff and then gradually add the castor sugar. Cook at 150 degrees for about half an hour. Enjoy!!!

Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiment

Today, these guys showed us an experiment with baking soda and vinegar. Before we did the experiment we made predictions about what might happen. We said that it might:

  • rise up
  • cause a reaction
  • explode
  • poof like a cloud of smoke
  • get fizzy
  • froth up
  • create create carbon dioxide
  • bubble

Scary Slime!

This guy has been experimenting with some scary slime at home.

He says it is a bit gooey was squishy. It is breakable and it can stick.

WHAT YOU NEED:
Borax
PVA glue
Food colouring

If you would like to make this at home, here is a clip to help...

Egg White Experiment

Today we did some experiments to see what happened if we heated egg whites. We broke an egg white on an oven tray and predicted what would happen when we put it in the oven. We thought it might bubble, set, turn white, crystalise, pop, explode or flame up. Thankfully the last two didn't happen or else we might have burned the school down, but we did observe that it looked like cheese, turned from see through to white, went solid, milky and hardened up.
We also predicted what would happen if we beat the egg whites (and added sugar) and then heated them. We are excited to go back to school tomorrow to see what they are like and maybe eat them!

Jelly experiment

Yesterday, we took the jelly out of the fridge to see if it had set. We did an experiment with a balloon. Take a look at our video to see the results!

Here are some science experiment clips

How to make jelly: writing instructions

Today we wrote instructions about how to make jelly.

Making Jelly: Hook for our Inquiry

As part of our change inquiry, we are focusing on kitchen science. Today we started by making fruit jelly. We saw that the jelly crystals dissolved in the hot water. We have left the jelly in the fridge to set...
