Our Inquiry - Who are We?

 Welcome to 2023 Tautoru whānau!

We've loved getting to know our new Tautoru students, and creating a kind, caring whānau environment in the classroom. Over the last week we've introduced our Term 1 Inquiry focus: Who are we? With the support of our incredible whānau community we've been learning about the History of our names and what makes our families special and unique. Our tamariki bring such rich cultures and histories and we have learnt so much from each other. Our learnings have ranged from Chinese New Year celebrations, family maple syrup farms to Slovakian traditional dress and dolls.

Over the next week we will shift our attention to the world map, finding out where we all come from, and how we came together to the beautiful Miramar Peninsula. This learning fits nicely to the New Zealand History Curriculum, particularly the Culture and Identity focus on how "people in our area have come from a variety of places and some retain connections to these places." If you want to know more about our new History Curriculum, check out this link.

Please enjoy these photos from our learnings this week.

Inquiry The Earth, Our Home- Sorting and creating

Inquiry: Sorting and Creating

We have been doing lots of learning about how the sun, moon and earth work from space to create the changes that we see on earth like day and night. We are now sorting our learning and creating using different languages like dance, movie making and music to share what we've found out.

While some of us are rapping to a great tune about the moon or using dance to show day and night, others have been making movies. Here are some example of how we are growing our understanding about day, night, the solar system and how to share our new learning using movie making.

Blast Off Into Space!

If you had to travel our solar system, what would you take?

On Friday we used our character strength of creativity to design a rocket to take us to visit our solar system. We shared ideas and came up with a plan. We drew the outside then designed the inside with lots of detail to show all the things we would need to pack (plenty of our favourite toys of course!).

Our rockets are displayed in Tautoru so come in and have a look at what we have packed to travel to space.

Year 3 Transition Day 2: Flight Inquiry

On Tuesday, we had our second transition day where students had the chance to work in their new spaces with new students and teachers.

We did a mini-inquiry about flight. We investigated what would factors would make a paper plane fly further.

This is a short movie to show our plane throwing competition that we had at the end of our Inquiry. This was lots of fun!

Transition Day- Year 3 learning alongside Year 4 and 5: Portraits

On Friday we had a transition day. the Year 3 students spent a day in the Matariki/ Mahutonga space. We had a chance to get to work with students and teachers that we will be learning alongside next year.

We did an Inquiry into Portraits. We looked at some famous portraits and looked at similarities and differences between these. We did an investigation into the Maths of the face, thinking about proportions.

Here are some of our artworks:

Positive Education - Games

On Wednesdays we have some Autahi children and some year 4 buddies come in to Tautoru to work with us. This afternoon as part of our inquiry into play, we designed a game together with our buddy, then tested it. Finally, we were able to teach it to another buddy pair which was lots of fun!

It is nice for us to connect with other children across the school and great to see all of the positive relationships and connections being developed.
