I am a Thinker- Finding problems and Thinking of Solutions.

Can we change the world with Maths and Writing?

We have been using statistics to find our favourite animals and also to find out how much plastic we bring to school.

Our favourite birds:
How much plastic is in our lunch boxes:

The link is that many animals are getting sick from all our plastic rubbish. We have been writing about what we think about it. The green highlighter means that we are checking our writing and using our writing goals:

I Am a Thinker- Kids Led Learning

How many different kinds of learning are there? What if kids can lead their learning?

Our learner attribute for this term is 'I am a thinker.'  Part of being a thinker is solving problems, having and sharing ideas, and organising my ideas. In Tautoru we have periods of Kids Led Learning when we are not in a learning workshop. We can choose different kinds of learning to do to practise our orgnisation of ideas and problem-solving. This might include different challenges, choice writing or creating with our imagination.

Here are a few of the Kids Led Learning from this week.

The Marble Run Challenge: Create a marble run using a paper plate.

The Paper Bag Puppet Challenge: Design and make a puppet using a paper bag

The Buddy Writing Challenge: Create a story with a buddy.

Waitangi Day

What is Waitangi Day about? We began to work in our literacy groups to learn about Waitangi Day. There were lots of ideas about the day is about. Here were some of our first ideas:

We learned about how the Treaty of Waitangi was signed to help Māori people and those who had settled in Aotearoa to agree on how to share and look after Aotearoa New Zealand.

We then began to think about rules. Why do we need rules? How might having rules for certain things helps us? We tried to play games without rules.

 It was pretty tricky!

Then we played the games using the rules and it was much easier!
